Selectmen turn down restaurant

Some selectmen want to put the brakes on Sunday morning liquor service at local restaurants in the new year.

The Board of Selectmen on Dec. 23 voted 3-2 not to let the 99 Restaurant start serving alcohol at 11 a.m. on Sundays throughout 2009.

In 2008, the board had allowed a number of restaurants -- primarily those at Patriot Place -- to serve at 11 a.m. Sundays for New England Patriots home games.

The Sunday home game early pourings times might be continued, but a majority of selectmen have expressed concerns about allowing that privilege year round.

Selectmen Mark Sullivan, James Thrasher and Paul Mortenson voted against the year-round Sunday morning pouring at the 99.

"I would rather see us stick to noon openings," Sullivan said.

Board members have said a uniform policy needs to be reached.
