Selectman tees off on early liquor request by Country Club
By Frank Mortimer
Foxborough Country Club’s request to begin serving liquor at 11 a.m., instead of noon ,for Sunday brunches was shot down by the Board of Selectmen.
Other establishments, primarily at Patriot Place, have been granted the privilege.
The country club appears to be a victim of unlucky timing.
After joining a 3 to 2 vote in October to allow early Sunday pouring at the Ninety-Nine Restaurant on Fisher Street, selectmen chairman Mark Sullivan said he would entertain no more early liquor sales requests this year.
Sullivan, who has railed against early tippling on Sundays, said he wanted to see how the early sales hours work at other establishments before considering futher requests.
Uncorking that pledge Tuesday (Nov. 25), Sullivan joined members James Thasher and Paul Mortenson in rejecting Foxborough Country Club’s request for early pouring on Sundays.
Selectmen Paul Feeney and Lynda Walsh voted yes.
Feeney recently pointed out that liquor licenses must be renewed annually, which effectively gives the board the power to restore the noon pouring on Sundays if it wants to.
The board last August voted to allow 12 liquor license holders at Patriot Place and Gillette Stadium to open at 11 a.m. on Sundays for Patriots games -- one hour earlier than usual under state law. The board set a condition that food must available with liquor service.

" It IS all about Patriot's Place. The rest of the town doesn't count to the BOS. Liquor licenses, early openings, police & fire; these are all guaranteed to Patriot Place while the rest of the town can just pound dirt. South Foxboro might as well be part of Mansfield. "

" this bylaw in massachusetts over when liquor can be served on sundays is stupid and retarded.who cares when you can buy beer, liquor or whine on a sunday, its our god given right and freedom in the united states of america to be able to walk down to the package store, liquor store or bar/restaraunt and buy it anytime whether its 6am in the morning or midnight on a sunday.i cant believe our congress in massachusetts makes up this stupid law to begin with, because this law never existed more than 70yrs ago or longer.it shouldnt matter when you can purchase liquor on a sunday,i cant believe how much the state is making such a big deal over yeast "
